How often does your deaf dog look at you? It doesn’t come as naturally to a deaf dog as it does to dogs that can hear, who are drawn to look up at you by your voice. If he doesn’t look at you regularly you can’t give him a hand signal cue. When you first start training, make sure you provide positive reinforcement every time you notice him looking at you, and let him know how happy you are that he did! There are games you can play to encourage him to look at you.
Once he is watching or looking at you regularly at home, then work on getting him to “check in” with you frequently when out walking as well. If you can master that, then you can eventually progress to letting him off lead at the park (provided it is a secure environment) and the real fun can begin.
